What is Beatspell mode?
Beatspell is a single-player story mode that unlocks as you progress through the main game. You play as a Magician who wakes up in a mysterious cave with no memory, and must use the power of rhythm to defeat monsters and bosses and find a way out.
There are 8 stages with a narrative arc across them, plus a bonus random cave quest that opens after the main story. Each stage ends with a boss fight.
How spells work
Spells are your primary combat tool. Each one has a distinct button sequence timed to the beat — press the right buttons on the right beats and the spell fires. Land every input in the sequence perfectly to deal the maximum damage or healing possible.
Spells begin at level 1 at the start of each stage. Defeating enemies earns you a level-up opportunity for a spell of your choice, gradually increasing their output through to level 5. You can carry up to three spells into a stage, swappable at the chapter menu — and certain enemies have resistances or weaknesses, so matching your loadout to the encounter matters.
Core spells
- Fire — A straight damage spell. Two-beat sequence; reliable at all levels.
- Cure — Restores your health. Three-beat sequence with a half-beat step.
- Wave — High-damage spell with a four-beat hold-and-release pattern.
- Lightning — Maximum damage, complex five-beat sequence. Highly rhythm-sensitive.
The backflip
When an enemy begins an attack, you can press ZL or ZR on the beat to perform a backflip. A well-timed backflip absorbs some or all of the incoming damage. A perfectly timed backflip stuns the enemy for two full measures — use that window to attack freely.
Build strategy
The Build Planner lets you try spell combinations before committing. A practical starting point:
- Cure — sustain insurance while you learn enemy patterns.
- Fire — consistent, easy-to-land damage at any stage of the run.
- Wave or Lightning — a high-damage option for boss phases once you are comfortable.
As you become more confident with backflip timing, you can drop Cure and replace it with a second damage spell to push for faster clears.
